There are many files at this web site that you can download. First, here is some pertinent Information.

QuickTime and MIDI

QuickTime Musical Instruments, an adjunct piece of QuickTime, was created so developers would not need to use a lot of space for music in their products. It gives voices to midi files. It is a software synthesizer.

MIDI files (which can be regarded as electronic piano rolls) are very small compared to audio files (which are digitized recorded sound). So in many instances midi is preferred over audio files.

How they Work:
When an application in your computer plays a midi file it sends midi instructions to QT Musical Instruments, a different software synthesizer, or to an external synthesizer. The synthesizer (software or hardware) gives voices to the midi instructions which you then hear through your computer speakers, headphones, or external speakers.

The best possible synthesizers are fairly expensive pieces of hardware. There are desktop synthesizers (relatively small physical packages) and synthesizers with keyboards which take a larger amount of space.

There are some excellent software synthesizers available besides QT Musical Instruments, but for the most part the best ones are ram hungry and need a very fast processor. (Not so much of a problem nowadays.) QT Musical Instruments is arguably the best onboard choice

Playing midi files on your Mac using QuickTime Musical Instruments

The problems with QT Musical Instruments can be:
  • Smoothness of play (a result of how 'fast' or how busy your Mac is on older computers)
  • Voice selection
  • Applications available on your Mac

Click Any of these topics to go directly to them:

Smoothness of play:

This is not so easily fixed if you have a very slow processor. If the music plays in a jerky fashion:

  • Are you playing the music while you type or are you running something like background printing? It never hurts to close things you aren't using.
  • Sometimes adjusting the cache size (accessible from your 'Memory' control panel) will speed things up. A formula several sources recommend is: physical ram X 32. Thus 8 mgb of ram would suggest a cache setting of 256.

Voice selection:

Midi Player Mac Free Download

If you have an older Mac system the only 'voice' you have is a kind of tinkly sound. This is easily fixed for no cost other than your time. One thing to know is that any version of QuickTime needs at least an 030 processor.

You have a choice between QT 2.1, QT 2.5, QT 3.0, QT 4.0, QT 5.0, and QT 6.0. There are advantages and disadvantages to all six. See QT 2.5 page or see main page 'QuickTime MIDI'.

When you install QT Musical Instruments whether you let the installers do the work or you do it manually you have to reboot to have use of the new QT Musical Instruments.

To change the Midi voices in a midi file

'QT player' ..... (at least with the Pro versions)

After opening a midi file with QuickTime Player

  1. Choose Get movie properties (Under get Information )
  2. Choose the Music track from the left pop up menu.
  3. Choose Instruments from the right pop up menu.
  4. Double - click on an instrument in the list to change its properties.

Audio Midi Setup App

QT 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 voices can also change voices if you download:

'QT Midi Player 1.6' or 'Arnold's Midi Player'

QT Midi Player 1.6 allows you to patch to your onboard synthesizer (Macs only) by using Apple Midi Player or OMS. This allows you to play the internal synth from the application you are working on. Many music applications never gave you a choice of using QuickTime Musical Instruments.

I've even gotten QT Midi Player to work on my iMac. Since older applications ask for a serial port (and you iMac users know there is none) this is the only way I could use a couple of my older applications; MusicShop being one of them. I set up QT Midi Player to access QuickTime. I then set up QuickTime to default to an external synth. The set up is a little tricky. Be persistent ..... I know it will work.

Arnold's Midi Player is one of my favorite tools. It allows me to mess around with midi files while using my internal synthesizer. Unfortunately Arnaud (Arnold) stopped supporting versions for 68k Macs. Then, relatively short time later, his site disappeared. (http://www.planete.net/~amasson/amp.html) What this means for us is there is no single site to download versions for PowerMacs and PCs. It is still possible to find and to pay for this wonderful shareware. If you like it (no matter where you find it) I urge you to pay for it. In the mean time I have these two applications for you to try.

These are stuffed and binhexed Arnold's Midi Players for Macs only. (Sorry PC owners.)

PowerMac version (712 k) click here

For more information see main page QuickTime MIDI.

Applications you will need on your Mac

Sweet Midi Player Mac

To open files that have been stuffed and binhexed you might need to download Stuffit Expander, which will unbinhex and unstuff. If you don't already have it you can download it at Aladdin.

In order to have the maximum number of voices available internally in your Mac you need this extension. This is a software synthesizer that needs to be installed in your extensions folder.

If you choose to alternate between versions of QT (I do ..... so I can experiment with voicing) do not keep them both in your extension folder. Two QT versions in your extension folder will cause a crash! QuickTime installers overwrite older versions so if you want to keep them you will need to remove them anyway. See more instructions.

If you don't have QuickTime Musical Instruments in your extension folder:

SimpleText:

Simple Text is a Mac Swiss Army knife. It does all kinds of things ranging from rudimentary word processing to playing audio and midi files (which have been converted and saved). It also will 'speak' written text out loud if you have the proper voice extensions installed. (Which are free at Apple)

Check your Computer to see if you have SimpleText. Go to 'Find' under 'File' on your toolbar. Ask for 'SimpleText' (one word). If you have it (and you probably have multiple copies) I recommend ditching all but the newest version. You don't have to download another. If you have it you also no longer need any of the copies of 'TeachText' that you probably have too.

Just about every installer of applications you put on your Mac includes a copy of SimpleText or TeachText so you will be able to use the 'Read Me' documents. That is why you probably have multiple copies of both. SimpleText works the same as TeachText and will do much more. It is preferred.

If you don't have SimpleText here is version 1.3.1 stuffed and binhexed. click here I'm not sure if you need an earlier version of SimpleText to work with QuickTime 2.1. If you do and can't find one drop me a note and I'll get one to you.

SimpleText is a very simple Player. You can use SimpleText to open and play Midi files which have been converted to and saved as a QT midi movie. You can listen to them play in the background while you do other work when using SimpleText. Open SimpleText, navigate to the file you wish to play, select it, then follow the directions on the screen. (There are more detailed directions in 'Convert a Midi file'.)

Movie Players

Midi Player Machine

If you have 'Movie Player 2.1' or a similar program installed all you will have to do to convert midi files is open the movie player, navigate to the file you wish to convert (from the 'file' option on the tool bar), and open. A list of options will appear then click on 'save'. After the file has been saved all you will ever have to do is click on the movie icon and Movie Player will open or ....... you can open SimpleText and navigate to the file and open. The advantage of opening saved files with SimpleText is that they will continue to play in the background while you do other work. The advantage of opening saved files with MoviePlayer 2.5 is that you can select from several options including 'loop'.

If you have to install MoviePlayer 2.1 download it then place it anywhere on your hard drive. Click here to download MoviePlayer_2.1.hqx

MoviePlayer 2.5 is a part of the QuickTime 2.5 package. It does more than MoviePlayer 2.1. You can loop with it and save the file with that option 'checked'. Once saved the other QT versions will follow that instruction. This player works with all the newer QuickTime versions, at least on my machines. It is my 2nd favorite application (I now prefer 6.0 Pro). If you are interested in QuickTime 2.5 click here

Movie Player 3.0 is a part of the QuickTime 3.0 package. (no longer available from Apple)

QuickTime Player 4.0 is a part of the QuickTime 4.0 package. (still available from Apple, but I recommend 6.0)

QuickTime Player 5.0 is a part of the QuickTime 5.0 package. (still available from Apple, but I recommend 6.0)

QuickTime Player 6.0 is a part of the QuickTime 6.0 package. To download click here.

Arnold's Midi Player offers some interesting features too. It doesn't need HyperCard Player and it works more like a midi controller. It plays straight midi files without converting them to QT Movies. It uses QT Music Instruments as the synthesizer. There is also a version for PCs that uses their onboard resources.

Download 'Arnold's Midi Player'

QTMidi Jukebox Players

There are some QT jukebox players available so you can play a whole folder at one click. I have included one of them with instructions that you can download if you choose. It was developed by Jim Blodget who teaches at Chemeketa Comunity College. This is a hyperstack. At the very least you will need HyperCard Player to use QTMidi Jukebox.

If you would like to have QTMidi Jukebox: Click here.

If you don't have Hypercard on your hard drive Hypercard Player 2.4.1 is available for no charge at apple.com. There is also the most recent update for Hypercard at this location. You don't need it if you already have Hypercard or Hypercard Player. If Hypercard Player will be new to your Mac simply store the whole folder anywhere on your hard drive.

Getting tools from Apple

Apple seems to have stopped handling QuickTime 2.1, MoviePlayer 2.1, and QT 2.5 (which includes MoviePlayer 2.5). I can pass these three applications on to you just the way they came from Apple, at least until they tell me to stop.

If you are interested in QuickTime 3.0(no longer available from Apple)

If you are interested in QuickTime 4.0 (still available from Apple, but I recommend 6.0)

If you are interested in QuickTime 5.0 (still available from Apple, but I recommend 6.0)
